MITTAL SEES GOLD MINE

Two days after Calcutta High Court removed the last remaining hurdle in the way of Tata Motors' Nano rolling out of Singur, Sunday saw Lakshmi Niwas Mittal - the world's fifth richest individual - descend on Writers' Buildings to learn more about business opportunities in the state from Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

After a 70-minute meeting with chief minister , their first ever , the richest Indian, whose ArcelorMittal is the world's No 1 steelmaker, said the state offered businessmen tremendous scope in several areas. "The changes that have taken place in the city are very impressive.... I am very impressed by his openness and frankness," said Mittal, who is on a private visit to the city.

However, the ArcelorMittal president & CEO, who extended his meeting with Bhattacharjee 40 minutes beyond schedule, stopped short of announcing any investment plans for Bengal. Besides steel, power and satellite townships, even the proposed petroleum, chemicals and petrochemicals investment region (PCPIR) figured in the discussions, he added.

"Though there are no specific plans (as far as Bengal is concerned), my officers will follow up on this meeting," Mittal said. He added that he would urge his "partner" HPCL to explore how it could be involved in the PCPIR venture slated to come up in Bengal. Mittal has joined hands with HPCL for the Bhatinda refinery project.
