A medical school provides an aspiring doctor with a basic qualification and training, and of course the necessary degree, for carrying out a career in medicine. The aspiring doctors often look for good opportunities after getting through the best medical schools. Although there is a list of top 100 medical schools, here are the top five amongst them. * Harvard University ranks first in the list of top medical schools. It is a private university in Massachusetts, USA. This university is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States, having been founded in the year 1636. The library contains more than 15 million volumes. About 6,700 undergraduate and 12,400 graduate students are served by a faculty of about 2,400 professors at the university.

The John Hopkins University is a private institute located in Maryland, U.S, and was founded in the year 1876.

* The University of Pennsylvania is the third one on this list. The university is a nonsectarian research university, located at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The biomedical research work here is largely funded by the National Institute of Health. This University has a vast library that houses 5.7 million book and serial volumes. It also subscribes to 44,000 print serials and e-journals. Penn's health-related programs are the strongest academic components of the university.

* The fourth university on the list is the Washington University in St. Louis. This University was founded in the year 1853 and is located in St. Louis, Missouri. The School of Physical Therapy is amongst the most reputed one within the Medical School of the University. The 14 libraries of the university hold around 3.6 million volumes, making it the largest in the state of Missouri. The School of Medicine is regarded one of the most highly competitive biomedical research institutes in the United States.

* The University of California, San Francisco holds the fifth position on the list. The medical school of the University is among the top health science professional schools. The school is renowned for its treatment centers of kidney and liver transplant, neurology, fetal surgery and HIV/AIDS. The distinguishing feature of the University of California, San Francisco is that it performs only biomedical and patient-centered research in its School of Medicine.

The other top 100 medical schools include Stanford University, Duke University, Yale University, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, Emory University and the list goes on. The students have a good choice to choose from the best medical schools, and they should do it keeping in mind their field of interest too.
