UNEXPLAINED MYSTERIES

One of the most written about mysteries is that of Atlantis. What does it mean? What is Atlantis? Where is it? What influence does it have on us? Does it exist in the first place? So many questions, so many ideas. For this essay I thought I’d go back to source and see if we can learn anything about its conception. And the beginning of the myth takes us back to that great philosopher, Plato, who first wrote about it. But can we find hints in Plato’s life and mind itself?

EARLY LIFE

Being nothing less than the father and instigator of western philosophy, Plato was born in Athens in 428BC to one of the great political families of his time. His actual name was Aristocles, Plato being a nickname which means ‘broad and flat’, referring to his shoulders which he used to great effect as a wrestler. Indeed, it was thought that Plato would be a great wrestler. But his talent was shown to be inferior and he tried being a poet, but was equally lacking in talent. Stuck for a profession, Plato began to think about his future. Statesman or philosopher were uppermost in his mind, but once he had heard Socrates speaking, he knew where his future lay; in philosophy - particularly in the ideas of Pythagoras.

PYTHAGORAS AND FORMS

Pythagoras had been an enigmatic figure. On the one hand a philosopher and on the other a mystic who was believed to have performed more than the odd miracle, he is seen today as the instigator of the quasi-religious cult of the Pythagoreans. Believing that behind the chaotic world of appearance there existed a harmonious world of numbers, he is seen as the father of mathematics.
Plato was fascinated by this harmonious world below the consciousness we appreciate. He developed it into his philosophy of ‘Ideal Forms’. To Plato this fundamental realm was a world of ideas and forms. Existing in an eternal state of unchanging reality, everything that could be conceived in the conscious world already existed as an idea or form in this other world. Hence, nothing could be invented, merely rediscovered. The true reality was one of images which fed the conscious mind.

FIRST HINT OF ATLANTIS?

We can immediately see here that Plato was more concerned with a world of images and symbols than with the world we experience. And it is attractive to suggest that Atlantis was not a true reality of the conscious world, but a symbol within the abstract inner-world of ideas. But why would he possibly want to create such an image if it held no existence in the real world? Because, at heart, Plato wanted to create this ideal form within the real world. Plato lived towards the end of the Athenian war with Sparta. And as Athens lost the fight, he experienced the end of Athenian democracy and the imposed rule of tyranny which followed. The new leaders forcing Socrates to commit suicide for offending the gods, they made it difficult for Plato to remain in Athens, and for many years he traveled before opening his Academy in 386BC.

THE REPUBLIC

Uppermost in his mind during his travels was a growing philosophy of the perfect state, or utopia. Dictatorship, he saw, was wrong. But democracy had also failed, resulting in defeat for Athens. Hence, he devised his Ideal Republic (Athens) In this republic there were to be no possessions or marriage. Everything was owned by the state and children were removed from their mothers, educated communally, classed the state as their parent, and all citizens as brothers and sisters. All would be educated up to the age of twenty, when the less intelligent would leave and take up menial duties within the state. The remainder would carry on their education for a further ten years, where the less intelligent would be dropped to join the military. The supremely intelligent who remained would then study philosophy until the age of fifty, when they would form the ruling class of philosopher-leaders.

POLITICAL INSURGENCY

This political ideology bears an uncanny resemblance to the ideal state of Atlantis conceived in Plato’s dialogues. During his lifetime he several times attempted to bring his political philosophy to fruition in Syracuse, but each time he failed to persuade the rulers. At one stage he was imprisoned for his interference, and on another occasion he was sent back to Athens a slave, luckily bought at the slave market by someone who knew him, thus gaining his freedom. This would have left him frustrated. And it is easy to see the possibility that, in another attempt to create his utopia, he built a myth about a previous utopia - a great, magnificent place - that was destroyed when his philosophy was dropped, descending the citizens into corruption, a state that existed in Athens in Plato’s time.

THE GREAT METAPHOR

As we can see, the whole of Plato’s life and philosophy suggests that Atlantis was a metaphor for a world he was determined to have imposed. Atlantis was his political philosophy in action, complete with an object lesson in what failure of his philosophy would mean. And in creating the metaphor, he was manipulating his inner-world of ideal forms, creating an eternal ideal to be rediscovered at some time in the future. Indeed, at the centre of Atlantis we find the Royal City, and the very design of the city gives valuable evidence that Atlantis was not so much a reality as a creation of the mind.

THE ROYAL CITY

At the centre of the city was a temple to Poseidon. This temple existed on an island surrounded by a circular canal 600ft wide. Around this canal was a circle of land 1,200ft wide, surrounded by another circular canal also 1,200ft wide. There was then another circle of land 1,800ft wide surrounded by a third circular canal 1,800ft wide. From the central island out to sea was a further subterranean canal, and around the entire complex was a huge stone wall. This design is significant. Fundamental to Plato’s philosophy was Pythagorean mysticism. And throughout the ancient world our ancestors have left a symbol that defines their mysticism.

A SYMBOL LIKE NO OTHER

This is the mandala. Sometimes drawn as a spiral, at other times as a series of concentric circles, its circular shape represents ultimate wholeness, and the complete construction represents the point at which the microcosm and macrocosm meet - the point at which the real world interposes with the ethereal. The various rings represent the levels of consciousness that must be stripped away before meeting the god-head at the centre, and from the outside to the centre is a path the mystic must travel down to gain unity. If the reader now draws the above plan of the Royal City of Atlantis, you will be drawing a typical mandala with seven concentric rings, complete with the path from the outer edge to the centre, and in that centre, the temple that represents the god-head. I put it to you that, no matter what evidence may be found of a ‘real’ Atlantis, the original conception was a metaphor of the mystical path we must trace in the mandala – and achieved in the real world through realization of Plato’s philosophy.

INFOSYS YOUNG AND SMART????

When you are so energetic and are still capable of doing so much, why did you leave the CEO’s position so soon? Is it merely to accommodate somebody else? I believe that every human being has to have incentives to perform, be it money, recognition, titles, etc. Money is not a big issue for the senior management at Infosys; all of them are fairly well to do. I believe that people should get the opportunity as early as possible so that they can create a lasting impression on the company. People should take responsibility when they are energetic and young rather than at the fag end of the career. I wanted to leave at 45, at some point in time I thought I would do other things but then I realised that I wouldn’t be competent (in doing other things). It should not become a musical chair where every year you are changing senior management. Given that all of us have agreed on a retirement age of 60, my belief was that a person should get a tenure of five years at least. Was there also an understanding that most of the founders should get a chance at running Infosys? No, there has been no such understanding. Mr Raghavan retired at 57, Ashok Arora left much earlier. As long as a founder is fit enough to lead the company, I think it’s only fair. After all he has spent long years with the company, made sacrifices and demonstrated competence. So why not? On the other hand, any non-merit based criteria will not be used for founders or anybody else. N R Narayana Murthy, Chief Mentor, Infosys So how does it feel to lay off? Actually Nandan and I haven’t laid off. However, we have left it to the CEO, COO and the CFO to ask us to participate on an issue. On issues that for some reason have not got resolved within a certain acceptable period of time, Nandan and I have a right to intervene. Because at the end of the day, if the company does not perform or fulfil its obligations, what’s the value of the title? Personally, how does it feel to let go? After all, you worked so hard to build this company, put together this team and built this base. In April 2002 when I stepped down and Nandan became the CEO, I took a decision to spend more and more time outside Infosys. I joined the board of several universities and companies. I accepted invitations to speak abroad. I spend less than 10 days a month in Bangalore so my motivations changed. I was much busier with my obligations outside, so I never felt that I was twiddling my thumbs and no one was calling me. Did you stay away so that Nandan could come into his own? Absolutely, otherwise everybody would come to me all the time for every decision. While outside Infosys, I respect peer-to-peer relationships very well and participate in a low-key manner, within Infosys, I have always been very comfortable being in charge. I have always driven from the front so it’s not easy sitting in the office and waiting for someone to contact me. I deliberately took a lot of responsibilities outside. Is Nandan doing the same? He is not seen too much in public now. We all agreed that the CEO, CFO and COO would be the only people to speak on business matters inside India. Outside India, we all participate because if there is an opportunity then we should leverage that. However, I find that Nandan is more active internally today. I find him much more proactive in discussions because he realises that the best way he can make this succeed is by putting in 120% of his effort while leaving all the glory to Kris. That’s the beauty of Infosys. So Kris is the leader, and a leader here is first amongst equals and all of us work even harder to make sure that he succeeds. When you turned 60 and stepped down, one of your peers said, “Has he really retired? He may not be in charge but for 200 days in a year, he is still building the Infosys brand globally”. Yes, both Nandan and I have been doing that. Whenever I go out and give a speech, I always look for connecting the corporation with prospective customers. There’s nothing wrong or illegal about it, we are not upstaging anyone. When I receive dividend from Infosys and have a decent investment in this company then why not? Infosys is like our daughter and we take pride in her; she is now a smart, young lady. She has found somebody more attractive and much younger with whom she wants to spend the rest of her life. It is sad to let go of her but it’s a natural progression. The founders decided not to allow spouses or children to work in Infosys. If you believe in meritocracy, then why should you exclude your children if they are talented? No matter how correct we are, if our family works here and a decision goes in its favour people might raise objections. At this point of time in the history of this country, it is very important to conduct an experiment and create an example. It is definitely unfair to our children because our kids are in Yale, Harvard and Stanford. But it is better that there is unfairness to a few individuals if it benefits a lot of people. In a civilised society, a few people have to make sacrifices so that the majority benefit. If someone from Yale, Harvard or Stanford came to work at Infosys wouldn’t you welcome them with both arms? Yes my daughter can join Wipro, TCS, IBM or Accenture. It is her right. But in a professional company, it is much better that you do not give opportunities to your own kin. In Ramayana, Rama was accused of letting down the interest of Sita. But there is a lesson in that fable and that is for the sake of majority; leaders have to set an example. There was a key milestone in your life, when all the founders wanted to sell out for $1 million and you said you would buy them out. What if they had said yes to your proposal? Would you have been able to build Infosys? We had run this company for nine years in an era when India was business unfriendly and one Saturday we sat down and had a discussion and people were feeling dejected. As the leader, I had to put a positive spiral. I didn’t have the money to buy them out. I would have been able to raise it. But I doubt that I would have been able to create an Infosys that is as strong as it is today without this teamwork. I would not have wanted to run the company by myself, probably I would have spoken for another three hours and managed to convince them (laughs.)

US interest rate futures are pricing in a roughly 86% implied chance of a 0.25% cut in the federal funds target rate to 4.50% at the end of their Oct. 30-31 policy meeting. Such a step, coming after September's 0.5% cut, would further reduce the appeal of dollar-denominated assets and undermine the Dollar.
GbpUsd rose 0.84% to 2.0496. UsdChf fell 0.33% 1.1736. UsdJpy rose 0.44% to 114.91 after having hit 113.26 low the day before. Firmer equity markets prompted some investors to move back into carry trades, hitting the Yen and boosting high-yielding currencies such as the Australian, New Zealand and Canadian dollars. EurJpy was up 1.03% to 163.83, its biggest one-day percentage gain in a month. GbpJpy went up 1.28% at 235.53 recovering from previous day 232.55 low. The high-yielding Australian Dollar and New Zealand Dollar gained respectively 1.24% and 1.1%. Both currencies also rose against the Yen. The Canadian Dollar touched a 33-year high against the Dollar after Canadian retail sales data for August beat expectations. UsdCad was last trading down 1.25% at 0.9663.

A man was bitten on the face by a crocodile when he accidentally collided with the reptile after diving through a wave at a surf beach in northeastern Australia, a newspaper reported Friday.

Camper Matt Martin, 35, received more than 40 sutures to gashes around his left eye and cheek after the mishap on Tuesday last week off the remote tropical northeast coast, The Cairns Post newspaper reported.

Martin said he was in waist-deep water when he dived through a wave and into the crocodile.

"I thought I was dead," the construction worker from Newcastle in New South Wales state told the newspaper. "It was sort of like when you hit rocks but the rocks had give and movement in them," he added.

Martin, who is on a driving vacation across northern Australia, said his face was snapped before he hastily retreated to the beach.

Martin said the crocodile did not mean him serious harm. "He wasn't serious. He had all the cards and he played it soft," Martin said.

CHANGING INDIA

On October 15, an India Observatory was launched in the famed London School of Economics and Political Science, to promote intellectual engagement between India, the UK and Europe.

Dr Y V Reddy, governor, Reserve Bank of India [Get Quote], spoke on the occasion, spotlighting India's achievements in the past and highlighting the progress that she is expected to make in the near future.

Mr Chairman, distinguished speakers and friends,

On behalf of the Reserve Bank of India, and on my own behalf, I would like to express our deep appreciation to the LSE and, in particular, to Mr Howard Davies, the director, for his initiative in establishing the India Observatory. The RBI is doubly privileged to be associated with the IO as a partner, since it is in honour of Dr I G Patel, one of my distinguished predecessors, and also because the economic policy departments in the RBI hope to benefit immensely from the new research network. Further, deepening relations with the LSE is of special significance for India, since London is the most prominent global financial centre.

India at 60 is both old and young. It has a great heritage and history of more than three millennia, yet independent India is very young, aspiring to remove poverty and bring dignity to all of the billion of its people by achieving an inclusive and rapid growth.

What has been the record of India's performance in 60 years?

Independent India exhibited more impressive price stability than most developing economies. The inflation rate was, on an average, in the single digit for 43 out of 57 years since 1950, and on most occasions, the provocations for higher inflation rates were external or domestic shocks, such as oil prices or monsoon conditions. The record of the RBI in maintaining price stability, in terms of what is currently known as 'core inflation', is thus noteworthy.

On the growth rate also, the record is one of a self-accelerating growth, which was, to some extent, enabled by the RBI. The average annual GDP growth in the decade of the 1950s was 3.6 per cent, in the 1960s it was 4.0 per cent, in the '80s it was 5.6 per cent and in the '90s, excluding crisis year 1991-92, it was 6.3 per cent. The problem decade was the '70s and the problem year, due to the Gulf crisis, was 1991-92, when the GDP growth rates were 2.9 per cent and 1.4 per cent respectively. In the new millennium, the GDP growth rate accelerated to 6.9 per cent and in the last four years (2003-04 to 2006-07), it averaged 8.6 per cent.

The impressive growth performance since the 1990s was possible due to the strong foundation of an indigenous industrial base, domestic entrepreneurial class, knowledge enhancing institutions and improvement in vertical social and economic mobility during the decades 1950s to 1990. The recent growth dividend is not just a miracle of marketisation, but is built on decades of conscious nation-building since Independence, and the extension of RBI's mandate during the period, inter-alia, to building of institutions and improving their delivery capabilities.

In terms of financial stability, India remained resilient to a series of crises faced by several emerging markets, because of careful pacing and sequencing of economic and financial sector reforms. In the external sector, India has come out with a clean track record, having met all payment obligations in time, even by pledging gold, a cherished national reserve of sentimental value, when it became necessary in 1991 due to the liquidity crisis. Yet, both sectors have not only become reasonably efficient and resilient but are also in alignment with global best practices.

In the current debate on macro-imbalances of the global economy, India does not figure at all as a contributing source, since our saving-investment as well as domestic-external demand balance in the economy are by and large appropriate.

The RBI's policies increasingly recognise global developments, but their adaptation to such developments, in the Indian context, is tailored to the prevailing status of institutions and markets, immediate relevance and the evolving needs of the country. As an example, the function of financial supervision continues with the RBI, but in 1994, this function attained a semi-independent status through the establishment of an overseeing authority in the Board for Financial Supervision -- but within RBI.

What is the outlook for the next 20 years?

The prospects for next 20 years, in our view, are bright for all the reasons and the record of performance that I have given. Yet, there are several challenges that are to be met in the medium term, as articulated in the recent annual report of the RBI, which reflects the views of eminent directors on its board. Permit me to list these challenges briefly. These are growth of agriculture sector, improvement in physical infrastructure, fiscal empowerment to enhance coverage and quality of education and health, improvement in governance and further reforms in the financial and external sector.

The financial sector reforms are aimed at further development of the financial markets, especially the bond market, enhancing integration of these markets and further improvement in the banking sector. In particular, determined emphasis on financial inclusion, financial literacy and credit counselling is appropriate and, therefore, should continue. In the external sector, the approach is towards fuller capital account convertibility, with focus on the enabling conditions for minimising the risks and maximising the benefits.

Are we reasonably confident that we can meet the challenges and maintain the present growth momentum with stability?

There are grounds for optimism and these include democratic values, financial system stability, skilled manpower, technological capabilities, demographic dividends, a large and growing entrepreneurial class and a penchant for innovation. The single most critical determining factor for the future would, by all accounts, be the improvements in governance that impacts personal security, property rights, business environment, and above all, a sense of fairness in the conduct of public policy.

India and the LSE

Before concluding, I would like to recall that many distinguished Indians benefited from education at the LSE. The most prominent, of course, are Dr B R Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution and an eminent economist, and Mr K R Narayanan, a reputed diplomat and former president of India. In a way, India might have, perhaps, repaid its debt through Dr I G Patel, who steered the LSE as its director during a critical period. Now, India and the LSE are entering a period of productive partnership, in which the RBI is privileged to play an active role.

CULTURAL MIS UNDERSTANDING

Four Indian cricket fans have been charged for allegedly racially abusing Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds by making monkey gestures, police say.

The four fans were evicted from a one-day international match in Mumbai (Bombay) on Wednesday.

Symonds is the only mixed race player in the Australian side, having made his international debut in 1998.

He frequently clashed with Indian players during the one-day series, which Australia won 4-2.

Cricket officials say that photographs of fans making offensive gestures to Symonds as he came in to bat have been handed over to police.

Police say that the four fans, including a woman, have been charged with harassment and have now been released on bail to appear in court at a later date.

The BBC's Sanjoy Majumder in Delhi says that the gestures were made even as an anti-racism message flashed on a big screen.

"There is no place for racism in cricket either on or off the field," a joint statement released on Wednesday by Indian and Australian cricket officials said.

"All cricket nations have to be on guard to ensure that the fun does not cross the boundary into unacceptable behaviour."

'Cultural misunderstanding'

Officials say that Indian fans might have targeted Symonds because of his heated exchanges with Indian bowlers Harbhajan Singh and Shantakumaran Sreesanth.

Symonds has sometimes clashed with Indian players

Symonds, who was born in England to West Indian parents, but then adopted and taken to Australia by his new family when he was two years old, complained of being subjected to monkey chanting earlier in the series.

Initially his allegations were dismissed by the Indian cricket authorities, who said that there was a lack of evidence and later that it may have been caused by a "cultural misunderstanding".

Their attitude was strongly criticised in the Australian press, which described it as "ranging from ridiculous to ignorant".

Our correspondent says that the issue has become a major debating point on online blogs, with charges being traded by Indian and Australian cricket fans.

With the rhetoric heating up and India due to tour Australia in December, our correspondent says that this is an issue that is threatening to turn ugly.

Cricket Australia officials have, however, ruled any possibility of future tours to India being boycotted because of the issue.

"I don't think it has got to that stage. There is an ICC International Cricket Council anti-racism policy in place. The ICC and the BCCI [the Board of Control for Cricket in India] will no doubt deal with these issues," said CA chief executive James Sutherland.

"While the incident in the last game in Mumbai was disappointing, it is pleasing to see the officials at the ground are taking the response to evict those people from the ground and take the appropriate action."

Sutherland said Symonds now wanted to put the matter behind him.

"It is not something that he is necessarily comfortable with - but he sees that there is no cause for reaction, because that only further inflames it," he added.

The Ten Habits of Highly Effective Brains

1. 1. Learn what is the "It" in "Use It or Lose It". A basic understanding serve you well to appreciate your brain's beauty as a living and constantly-developing dense forest with billions of neurons and synapses.
2. Take care of your nutrition. Did you know that the brain only weighs 2% of body mass but consumes over 20% of the oxygen and nutrients we intake? As a general rule, you don't need expensive ultra-sophisticated nutritional supplements, just make sure you don't stuff yourself with the "bad stuff".
3. Remember that the brain is part of the body. Things that exercise your body can also help sharpen your brain: physical exercise enhances neurogenesis.
4. Practice positive, future-oriented thoughts until they become your default mindset and you look forward to every new day in a constructive way. Stress and anxiety, no matter whether induced by external events or by your own thoughts, actually kills neurons and prevent the creation of new ones. You can think of chronic stress as the opposite of exercise: it prevents the creation of new neurons.
5. Thrive on Learning and Mental Challenges. The point of having a brain is precisely to learn and to adapt to challenging new environments. Once new neurons appear in your brain, where they stay in your brain and how long they survive depends on how you use them. "Use It or Lose It" does not mean "do crossword puzzle number 1,234,567". It means, "challenge your brain often with fundamentally new activities".
6. We are (as far as we know) the only self-directed organisms in this planet. Aim high. Once you graduate from college, keep learning. The brain keeps developing, no matter your age, and it reflects what you do with it.
7. Explore, travel. Adapting to new locations forces you to pay more attention to your environment. Make new decisions, use your brain.
8. Don't Outsource Your Brain. Not to media personalities, not to politicians, not to your smart neighbour... Make your own decisions, and mistakes. And learn from them. That way, you are training your brain, not your neighbour's.
9. Develop and maintain stimulating friendships. We are "social animals", and need social interaction. Which, by the way, is why 'Baby Einstein' has been shown not to be the panacea for children development.
10. Laugh. Often. Especially to cognitively complex humor, full of twists and surprises. Better, try to become the next Jon Stewart (Note: I just corrected his name from "John"...which may call for a #11: Spellcheck!)

1. Trying to Find the “Right” Answer

One of the worst aspects of formal education is the focus on the correct answer to a particular question or problem. While this approach helps us function in society, it hurts creative thinking because real-life issues are ambiguous. There’s often more than one “correct” answer, and the second one you come up with might be better than the first.

Many of the following mental blocks can be turned around to reveal ways to find more than one answer to any given problem. Try reframing the issue in several different ways in order to prompt different answers, and embrace answering inherently ambiguous questions in several different ways.

2. Logical Thinking

Not only is real life ambiguous, it’s often illogical to the point of madness. While critical thinking skills based on logic are one of our main strengths in evaluating the feasibility of a creative idea, it’s often the enemy of truly innovative thoughts in the first place.

One of the best ways to escape the constraints of your own logical mind is to think metaphorically. One of the reasons why metaphors work so well in communications is that we accept them as true without thinking about it. When you realize that “truth” is often symbolic, you’ll often find that you are actually free to come up with alternatives.

3. Following Rules

One way to view creative thinking is to look at it as a destructive force. You’re tearing away the often arbitrary rules that others have set for you, and asking either “why” or “why not” whenever confronted with the way “everyone” does things.

This is easier said than done, since people will often defend the rules they follow even in the face of evidence that the rule doesn’t work. People love to celebrate rebels like Richard Branson, but few seem brave enough to emulate him. Quit worshipping rule breakers and start breaking some rules.

4. Being Practical

Like logic, practicality is hugely important when it comes to execution, but often stifles innovative ideas before they can properly blossom. Don’t allow the editor into the same room with your inner artist.

Try not to evaluate the actual feasibility of an approach until you’ve allowed it to exist on it’s own for a bit. Spend time asking “what if” as often as possible, and simply allow your imagination to go where it wants. You might just find yourself discovering a crazy idea that’s so insanely practical that no one’s thought of it before.

5. Play is Not Work

Allowing your mind to be at play is perhaps the most effective way to stimulate creative thinking, and yet many people disassociate play from work. These days, the people who can come up with great ideas and solutions are the most economically rewarded, while worker bees are often employed for the benefit of the creative thinkers.

You’ve heard the expression “work hard and play hard.” All you have to realize is that they’re the same thing to a creative thinker.

6. That’s Not My Job

In an era of hyper-specialization, it’s those who happily explore completely unrelated areas of life and knowledge who best see that everything is related. This goes back to what ad man Carl Ally said about creative persons—they want to be know-it-alls.

Sure, you’ve got to know the specialized stuff in your field, but if you view yourself as an explorer rather than a highly-specialized cog in the machine, you’ll run circles around the technical master in the success department.

7. Being a “Serious” Person

Most of what keeps us civilized boils down to conformity, consistency, shared values, and yes, thinking about things the same way everyone else does. There’s nothing wrong with that necessarily, but if you can mentally accept that it’s actually nothing more than groupthink that helps a society function, you can then give yourself permission to turn everything that’s accepted upside down and shake out the illusions.

Leaders from Egyptian pharaohs to Chinese emperors and European royalty have consulted with fools, or court jesters, when faced with tough problems. The persona of the fool allowed the truth to be told, without the usual ramifications that might come with speaking blasphemy or challenging ingrained social conventions. Give yourself permission to be a fool and see things for what they really are.

8. Avoiding Ambiguity

We rationally realize that most every situation is ambiguous to some degree. And although dividing complex situations into black and white boxes can lead to disaster, we still do it. It’s an innate characteristic of human psychology to desire certainty, but it’s the creative thinker who rejects the false comfort of clarity when it’s not really appropriate.

Ambiguity is your friend if you’re looking to innovate. The fact that most people are uncomfortable exploring uncertainty gives you an advantage, as long as you can embrace ambiguity rather than run from it.

9. Being Wrong is Bad

We hate being wrong, and yet mistakes often teach us the most. Thomas Edison was wrong 1,800 times before getting the light bulb right. Edison’s greatest strength was that he was not afraid to be wrong.

The best thing we do is learn from our mistakes, but we have to free ourselves to make mistakes in the first place. Just try out your ideas and see what happens, take what you learn, and try something else. Ask yourself, what’s the worst that can happen if I’m wrong? You’ll often find the benefits of being wrong greatly outweigh the ramifications.

10. I’m Not Creative

Denying your own creativity is like denying you’re a human being. We’re all limitlessly creative, but only to the extent that we realize that we create our own limits with the way we think. If you tell yourself you’re not creative, it becomes true. Stop that.

In that sense, awakening your own creativity is similar to the path reported by those who seek spiritual enlightenment. You’re already enlightened, just like you’re already creative, but you have to strip away all of your delusions before you can see it. Acknowledge that you’re inherently creative, and then start tearing down the other barriers you’ve allowed to be created in your mind.
